Calendar of Events

In addition to our exhibitions, the Schulz Museum provides a wide variety of programs and presentations throughout the year, giving our visitors opportunities to: meet professional cartoonists; view some of Schulz's favorite movies in our 100-seat theatre; make hands-on crafts and learn about different cartooning techniques; and attend Members-Only parties. Each visit to the Schulz Museum is a unique experience!


July 2008

SATURDAY, JULY 12 ● 1–3pm
Cartoonist-in-Residence
Every second Saturday the Schulz Museum hosts a new Cartoonist-in-Residence! This July meet, watch, and talk to graphic designer Tony Caporusso. Tony has created the comic character Lucky Pup and is in the process of illustrating and publishing his first children’s book.

JULY 16 THROUGH DECEMBER 1, 2008
New Exhibition|Political Peanuts
Schulz captured the ups and downs of the campaign trail many times during Peanuts' fifty years. Take time out to have a good laugh at the otherwise serious world of election year politics in Peanuts.

Family Weekend
Celebrate Snoopy and the Gang with special activities all weekend! On Saturday from 1–4pm, learn to make Snoopy and Woodstock out of origami with Henry Kaku. On Sunday, enjoy a root beer tasting contest and more!

Cartoonist-in-Residence
Every second Saturday the Schulz Museum hosts a new Cartoonist-in-Residence! This August visitors will meet, watch, and talk to Joe King, a 2004 Pulitzer Prize Nominee who designs both the product and packaging for a wide variety of specialty items. He is currently in production of several self-syndicated comic strips distributed world-wide under the banner of his publishing forge, Funny Paperz.

AUGUST 16, 2008 THROUGH JANUARY 26, 2009
New Exhibition|Schulz's Beethoven: Schroeder's Muse
Visitors will be able to view Beethoven-themed strips while listening to the music that Schulz transcribed into his panels. The exhibition will also feature Schulz’s reference books on classical music; personal letters he wrote about his growing appreciation of the genre; original Beethoven manuscripts, scores, and first editions; paintings and a bust of Beethoven; and a fortepiano.

Join us for a lovely summer evening reception with music and desserts to celebrate the opening of our newest exhibition, Schulz’s Beethoven: Schroeder’s Muse.

Cartoonist-in-Residence
Meet, watch, and talk to Debbie Huey, the northern California artist, writer, and creator of the minimalist comic series Bumperboy. Debbie’s work also includes the Xeric Award–winning book Bumperboy Loses his Marbles, and her new graphic novel Bumperboy and the Loud, Loud Mountain, which was named one of Booklist’s “Top 10 Graphic Novels for Youth” in 2007.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 ● 4– 6pm
Free Teacher Open House
Teachers are invited to the Pacific Coast Air Museum for refreshments and information about our new educational field trip and classroom programs. Sonoma County Museum and Luther Burbank Gardens will also be present.

Cartoonist–in–Residence
Meet, watch, and talk to digital caricaturist Rhoda Grossman.  In addition to drawing by hand, she uses a pressure sensitive tablet and a Mac computer to create digital caricatures. She has also written numerous books, including tutorials on computer art.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18
Guest Cartoonist
Bloom County and Opus creator, Berkeley Breathed, will speak about his work and sign his new children’s book, Pete & Pickles. Breathed won a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987, and in addition to his comic strips, which have been collected in eleven books, he has produced seven children’s books.

New Exhibition | When the Fur Flies:
Kerfuffles, Scrapes, and Scufflein Peanuts

Pounding and punching are the subjects of this light-hearted look at the fisticuffs in Peanuts. Schulz revealed in a 1967 interview that he “liked the violent action [strips], kids getting bowled over and such things that cartoons were born to do.”

FREE DAY ~ Beethoven Fortepiano Recital and Lecture
Admission to the Schulz Museum is free all day! At 2pm learn about Beethoven’s pianos and music through a joint lecture/recital. Dr. William Meredith of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San Jose State University will speak about Beethoven’s life, and Janine Johnson
will perform Beethoven’s music on the fortepiano.

New Exhibition | Petaluma to St. Paul:
The Places of Peanuts

Though Schulz never divulged the exact location of the Peanuts Gang’s neighborhood, he provided visual clues suggesting that the Browns and their friends were safely tucked away in some post-World War II suburban locale. And, despite the mystery of the strip’s setting, Schulz occasionally referenced specific locations, including his home town, former home towns, and nearby villages.

Gingerbread Doghouse Workshops
Create Snoopy’s doghouse out of gingerbread—complete with a marshmallow Snoopy on top!  Also make cards and other holiday crafts. Saturday 10am–12pm for “Parent and Me” pre–K to K, and 1–4pm for grades 1–6. Sunday 1–4pm for grades 1–6.
