Calendar of Events

In addition to our exhibitions, the Schulz Museum provides a wide variety of programs and presentations throughout the year, giving our visitors opportunities to: meet professional cartoonists; view some of Schulz's favorite movies in our 100-seat theatre; make hands-on crafts and learn about different cartooning techniques; and attend Members-Only parties. Our Special Group Programs provide visitors with even more hands-on opportunities, including Home School Days, Girl Scout Days, and special guest presentations and lectures. And at least once each year we offer a Master Class Series for Adults who want to learn cartooning techniques from some of the best in the field!

Each visit to the Schulz Museum is a unique experience!

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 ● 1–3pm
Cartoonist Sketch-A-Thon Celebrates 60 Years!
Celebrate 60 years of Peanuts with Bizarro creator Dan Piraro and over a dozen other guest cartoonists as part of our Cartoonist-in-Residence program! From 1–3pm visitors can meet, watch, and talk to a variety of guest cartoonists including Dan Piraro, All Over Coffee creator Paul Madonna, digital caricaturist Rhoda Draws, Nickelodeon animator Mike Gray, and more.

At 3:30pm, Dan Piraro will give a presentation and speak about his work. Piraro recently won the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 ● 10am–1:30pm
Clay-mation Workshop
Spend five Saturdays learning to create and mold characters with clay. Then use web cameras and computers to make your own movie. Students will work in small groups with instructor and artist Peter Swehla to make a short stop-animation movie with clay characters. Recommended for Grades 5 and up.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22
New Exhibition — Searching Out New Territory: Experiments in Peanuts
Charles Schulz tested the bounds of his comic world from time to time, but quickly learned to discard characters, themes, and portrayals that distracted from the strip.

New Exhibition — Portraits of Schulz
Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Peanuts by viewing how others saw its celebrated creator. See rare self-portraits by Schulz, as well as how fellow artists captured and admired him through their own art in a mixture of mediums from oil paintings to sculptures. This exhibition will run concurrently with the debut of Schulz’s photographic portrait in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Visitors will also discover Schulz’s tongue–in–cheek perspective on portraiture as depicted in PeanutsPortraits of Schulz offers a unique experience for visitors to get a personal glimpse of the man who has made Peanuts magical for the past 60 years.

FREE Admission Day
Celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Peanuts comic strip with FREE admission to the Museum all day and special visits from Snoopy between 11am and 12:30pm. At 2pm, meet author Beverly Gherman, who will sign copies of her newest book, Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz.

Every second Saturday the Schulz Museum hosts a new Cartoonist-in-Residence! This month meet, watch, and talk to cartoonist, animator, and game designer Steve Purcell, who won the 2007 Eisner Award for his independent comic, Sam & Max. Purcell has worked with Telltale Games, Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, LucasArts, and Marvel Comics during his illustrious career.

Girl Scout Day at the Museum: Peanuts...Naturally
Explore the natural world through the eyes of the Peanuts characters and through a variety of fun, hands-on projects. Make a terrarium and solar oven to take home and create other crafts in support of the Brownie’s Earth is Our Home Try-its and the Girl Scouts’ Earth Connections badge. Also ice skate at Snoopy’s Home Ice and earn a special Schulz Museum patch.

Cub and Boy Scouts will explore nature and the environment through the eyes of the Peanuts characters and through a variety of fun, hands-on activities in support of the Tracking Merit Badge and Nature Belt Loop. Also enjoy ice skating at Snoopy’s Home Ice and receive a special Schulz Museum patch!

For the Birds: Peanuts. . .Naturally Family Day
Learn to make Woodstock, penguins, and cranes out of origami with local origami artist Henry Kaku. Make other origami creations too. Kaku has been practicing the art of origami for over 50 years. He has taught origami classes at many schools, to both students and teachers, and conducted origami demonstrations at community cultural events throughout the Bay Area.

Join local artist Lynn Roth for a paper-making workshop. Make your own paper using recycled materials, wild flowers, and other creative materials. Roth, a dedicated artist and teacher, has taught art throughout Sonoma County for the past 18 years.
